Welcome to UCD
School of Mathematical Sciences.
This is an exciting era for the Mathematical Sciences. Fundamental core
areas of Mathematics are thriving as witnessed, for example, by the
stunning solution of age-old problems such as
‘Fermat’s Last Theorem’. Many significant
advances have taken place through interactions at the frontiers between
Mathematics and Physics especially in the areas of geometry and string
theory. It has long been recognized that the Mathematical Sciences
underpin modern physical science and engineering, acting as their
universal language. Now emerging life science disciplines, such as
bioinformatics and proteomics, are rapidly moving to radically new
kinds of analysis and explanation demanding understanding through new
mathematical and statistical tools. In addition, the Mathematical
Sciences are increasingly being called upon outside the traditional
sciences, to analyze and solve a wide array of problems in emerging
‘sciences’ such as communication, finance,
manufacturing, and business.
The new UCD School of Mathematical Sciences offers coordinated
undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes in all aspects of
Mathematics, Mathematical Physics, Computational Science, Meteorology,
Statistics and Actuarial Science. The members of the new School have
outstanding international records of excellence in research across the
Mathematical Sciences: Algebra and Analysis, including the Mathematics
underpinning communications theory, Physical Applied Mathematics (Fluid
Dynamics, Meteorology, Theoretical Physics…) and
Non-Physical Applied Mathematics (ICT, Biological, Financial...),
Statistics (Biostatistics, Environmental Statistics,
Epidemiology…) and Actuarial Science. As is clear from this
list, the importance of the Mathematical Sciences continue to grow both
in depth and in breadth; progress in science, in all its aspects,
requires close involvement of the mathematical core; new science and
new mathematics go hand in hand.
